ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTORS
Dale Hails,

She developed an innovative breathing and stress management
course for the cardiopulmonary rehab program at Vanderbilt
University Medical Center’s Dayani Human Performance
Center.
Dale uses imagery, allegory, story-telling, and humor to
help clients
maintain focus on postural, biomechanical, kinesiological,
and visual detail to create an environment for
self-healing. Her experience with pain and stress
management, orthopedic and disease management is both
personal and client oriented.
Dale has been practicing yoga daily since 1975. She
attributes her practice to giving her the courage to pursue
her Master’s degree in Exercise Science, emphasis on Motor
Learning and Biomechanics.

Susan
Charles, MS, RYT
Susan Charles is a Registered Yoga Teacher, Clinical
Exercise Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer who
healed her own body, transforming an injury into a passion
for teaching others the benefits of yoga. Susan pursued a
high-stress career in corporate marketing for many years
before discovering yoga. Intimidated by the hyper-flexible
people who were "good at it" and (incorrectly) believing
that she would be "lousy" at it; sports and fitness were her
passion -- NOT yoga. Later in life, sidelined by a hip
injury from running, a perceptive therapist suggested yoga
for rehabilitation. Since then yoga has become a major part
of her life, and teaching yoga to others has become her
passion. "I know first hand what it feels like to be
stiff , inflexible, and in pain! I also know how much yoga
practice can turn your life around. I want to help you
discover the amazing therapeutic, conditioning, and
spirit-lifting benefits that the right yoga class can bring
to you."

as your acceptance and encouragement of individual abilities
and limits. I benefit physically and mentally from the class
and especially enjoy the friendly, relaxed environment. KF
§
I can’t
tell you how much I enjoy the classes. I look forward to
going to the classes and getting a good workout. The classes

balance, but the camaraderie also adds immensely to my sense
of well being. JL

I really
LIKE coming to your yoga class…with your yoga class I look
forward to attending because I know it is exactly what I
need. I feel it is a meaningful practice-- I enjoy yoga
while there and feel it has helped me in many ways. Thank
you for making this class possible for us. JK
§
This Yoga
class accepts me for where I am, but it does not leave me
there with the attitude that I am not capable of
improvement. Susan has a gentle way of pushing when
appropriate and permitting modifications when necessary.
Susan encourages and fine-tunes each individual’s position,
thus optimizing each person’s learning experience. My
health, flexibility and strength are progressing with each
session. BW
§
Your yoga
class is wonderful. We all enjoy it a lot… It works for
those of us who cannot do all the moves. I think you help
us work harder and feel like we are doing something. Thanks
for doing it! HL

WHAT IS YOGA?
Yoga originated over 5000
years ago in India and is a system of physical
movements that are designed to cleanse and realign the body,
and to strengthen the musculature as well as the nervous
system.
The practice of yoga uses
proper breathing techniques which will teach us to use all,
not just part of our lungs. This breathing combined with
the physical postures or “asanas” will recharge our physical
and mental state and will systematically work all parts of
the body. Muscles and ligaments are stretched and toned,
and spine and joint movement is greatly increased. Overall
circulation is also improved, allowing us to feel refreshed
and energized. Yoga provides deep relaxation, releasing
deep held tensions in the muscles. This can carry over into
all of our other activities, teaching us to let go of
worries and fears.
■
YOGA
brings together the
MIND and the
BODY.
■
YOGA teaches us how to unite action with
attention, creates a condition in which
WE BECOME
PRESENT in every
action in every moment.
■
YOGA combines proper
BREATHING, EXERCISE AND
RELAXATION, promoting
BALANCE
of body, mind and spirit.
■
YOGA
REDUCES STRESS,
lowers blood pressure and may ease the effects of depression
and anxiety.

YOGA may help
REDUCE THE EFFECTS
of asthma, arthritis, chronic fatigue, headaches, diabetes,
etc.
■

improves STRENGTH,
FLEXIBILITY, MUSCLE TONE, and
ENDURANCE AND COORDINATION.
■
YOGA can
LOWER FAT levels,
improve CIRCULATION,
and strengthen the immune system.
■
YOGA aligns the body allowing for
GREATER EASE of
movement.
■
YOGA releases tension from the body,
INCREASES YOUR ENERGY,
and balances the flow of
energy
throughout the body.
■
YOGA
teaches DISCIPLINE
and self control within the mind and body.

Who can benefit from yoga?
Yoga
can be practiced by any one at any level of fitness, since
it is a very individualized system designed to help us to
discover how to “honor our boundaries and expect them to
expand.” You will discover your own limitations and
simultaneously experience them transformed as your practice
continues.
Yoga can benefit athletes by increasing their range of
motion, agility strength and endurance and will help
everyone to develop within themselves the knowledge that
strength, flexibility and control of one’s body are all
interconnected.
Yoga is a process in which you watch yourself unfold,
developing determination, patience and balance from the
inside out.

training and philosophy. Most classes range from one hour
to one and a half hours depending on the particular class
chosen. Classes may include movement, postures, breathing,
sound, meditation and guided relaxation. Yoga creates a
sense of well being that will permeate all areas of your
life!
ENJOY!
Things to Consider:
►
Feel free
to ask questions. The instructor is here for you. Any
questions before, during or after class are always
welcome.
►
Please let
the instructor know of any special condition you may have.
►
It is best
to practice yoga on an empty stomach. Allow 2-3 hours
between eating and your Yoga class
►
Be sure to listen to your body. During the class
follow the instructions and feel free to stop or modify
movements whenever necessary.
►
Bring a
Yoga mat or a large blanket to class. Mats will be
available to purchase for $25 each. A towel and a water
bottle are also suggested. You will want to wear
comfortable, light and form fitting clothes. Bare feet are
best. Leotards, tights, shorts and t-shirts are all
acceptable.
►
Drink
plenty of water and get plenty of rest. Some students
notice a feeling of tiredness in the beginning. Not to
worry, this will pass and will be replaced with a feeling of
increased energy and profound relaxation. Remember you are
involved in a transformational process that uses energy to
heal, rebuild and energize. You can maximize these benefits
by increasing your water intake and getting rest.
►
In addition to class, practice
2-3 times a
week is suggested for optimal
results. Please inquire about practice tapes/booklets
for home use. Daily practice is ideal.
►
Classes
will start and end on time You are welcome to come in early
to begin to stretch or center yourself. We try to keep this
as a quiet time as a courtesy to others. If you arrive late
for class, it is ok. However, please enter as quietly as
possible and join in.
►
Class fees
are payable to the instructor at the first session.
►
If you are going to be away
due to business or vacation,
letting the instructor
know at the first class of the
session will provide you with
the opportunity to have a prorate for that session. If
you are ill, you may make up the class by taking two classes
or coming in on another day if classes are offered. If
not, you will receive a credit in the next session only.
►
You are welcome to bring a
guest at any time (space permitting). Please
check
with the instructor for the guest fees.
YOGA PHILOSOPHY
The word Yoga comes from
the Sanskrit word “YUJ”, meaning to bring two things
together; to meet, to unite, to enter a relationship.
It implies “uniting with or reaching a point that you have
not reached before”. If there is something that seems
impossible to do today and we find a way to make it
possible, that progression is Yoga.
Yoga reawakens the “MIND-BODY CONNECTION” and brings us back
to a greater state of awareness.
We may come to Yoga for many different reasons…to become
less stressed, to workout, to become more flexible. As the
body begins to change, we notice a calmness coming over us.
We may overreact to stress less and less, stay more aware
and become more neutral. We may even find our relationships
with others becoming easier.
_______________________________________________________
Do you remember when you
were a child and could move freely, without the hitches and
glitches of an achy back or creaky knees? Remember the
energy level you felt when you woke up in the morning, ready
to embrace the day? Yoga helps you reclaim the attitude,
energy level and mobility of your youth.
Any reason for practicing yoga is a good reason. Enhancing
flexibility and releasing stress are as noble a purpose for
performing yoga as the awakening of spirituality. This is
the great gift of yoga – it serves and nourishes us at every
level of our being and spontaneously contributes to greater
well being in all domains of life. Yoga will help you
discover gifts within yourself that have remained unopened
since your childhood – gifts of peace, harmony, laughter,
and love.
